Eton is a small village that punches far above it's weight class in terms of cultural significance. Being home to the famed Eton College, it shapes the minds of the richest and most influential people in all of Elen. Eton is home to 170 residents, roughly a third of whom are adults who ensure the town and college function while the rest are students. Everyone in the town receives a stipend to study or work directly from Duke Dredd. There is one temple and one library. The vast majority of discipline is handled in house, so there are only two public guards. There are 17 homes in the town, two of which are large dormitories.
The Temple of St. John Berchmans is the home of four priests and serves as the primary training grounds for new deacons in Elen. Being the temple of the patron saint of altar boys, the priests of St. John Berchmans exhibit of air of servitude and humility to those who visit. But below the church, where the light of day does not reach, their evil intentions are bourn out. Even the blessing they offer, a Homunculus Servant, is designed to lead vulnerable students towards a life of sin.
The blessing of this temple is: "You can cast the spell Homunculus Servant one time without material components."
The Bodleian Library is the foremost of the repositories of knowledge in the Kingdom of Elen. There are thousands of books within, and an 80% chance that the answer to any particular question about history might be find somewhere deep within it's stacks. It's multiple levels and serves as an intellectual mecca for the curious and inquisitive. It is maintained by a hodgepodge student council that sees very little continuity, so the organization is much worse than one would expect from such an establishment.
The Alchemical Laboratory of Ingel Brecht is the foremost research institute concerned with the school of transmutation. It is housed within Eton College. It is a run by the wily old gnome Ingel Brecht, who was dreamt up by a student some 15 years ago who fell asleep worrying about an upcoming potion brewing exam. He is frenetic and short and knows just about any potion recipe you could imagine. He forces anyone who wishes to use his laboratory to learn gnomish before they are allowed to enter.
The Mighty Bridge of Dread is directly adjacent to Eton, and about halfway between Valencia and Wealdstone. This combination means that Eton is a very frequent stop for trade caravans. This is an untolled bridge in the official sense, but many entrepreneurial scammers and thieves populate it, offering "protection" from the dangers of the thieves and the dragons that hunt the chokepoint. These folks are sometimes opportunistic students who just learned their first disguise spell, but are more often just basic thieves.
The Air to the Kingdom is a permanent tavern, a rarity in small villages. The brewmaster, Mrs. Pompernell, prides herself on how fizzy she can make her ale and beer. Rumor has it that her and Mrs. Brecht get together at night to make the bubbles, if you know what I mean. The tavern has three large beds, each big enough for 10 folks, as well as a warm dance floor by the hearth that has slept up to 30 folks in the past. A large stew is always on, ready to rouse the weak and weary.
Sir Tigre of the Steppe is one of the two public guards that keep this town safe. He is a large man with orange and white streaks in his enormous bushy hair, which is tied behind his head with a black ribbon. His primary objective is to protect the students and teachers of Eton College from the travelers, tricksters, and vagrants that pass through the town on a regular basis. The teachers appreciate his firm hand and willingness to correct the students when they go past the usual childish antics. The students think he's a curmudgeon and much prefer Madam Le. He has the statblock of a Knight.
Madam Le of the Lance is a bulky woman with harsh tan lines framing her eyes like a domino mask, hard earned from a lifetime on the tiltyard. She is older, in her mid 50s, but quite strong. In the years after the Conquering of Elen she dominated the jousting Tourney circuit, winning an immense fortune and quite a lot of fame. She now lives on a farm on the outskirts of Eton, where she lets her string of horses roam freely, tended to by her husband. She keeps her days busy by serving as the captain of Eton's two public guards. She can often be found holding court and telling her tourney stories in The Air to the Kingdom. She has the statblock of a Champion, but uses a lance and a horse.
Father Markus is a crotchety old man who hides his dark intentions behind a mask of generosity. Every single copper he finds is given to the poor, leaving him to wear only a ragged brown tunic every day. He has taken, and seemingly fulfills with great gusto, a vow of poverty. His home is in the temple alongside his three deacons. His is the only room without a window, holding nothing more than a Bible, a bed, a spare tunic, and a blanket. It is even said that he subsists off the Eucharist alone, only rarely supplementing with clear broth when he is ill. In truth, he feasts weekly in the basement of the temple, gorging himself on the offerings he makes to his dark master alongside his two loyal deacons. He has the statblock of a Cult Fanatic.
Deacon Daniel is a young dropout of Eton College. His eyes rarely rise to meet anyone's, and he walks with a severe limp. The child of two professors, he has chosen to stay close to home, becoming a deacon under the kind-but-grouchy Father Markus. He is unaware of his Priest's sadistic nature. Father Markus uses Daniel as a convenient tool, sending him to speak on behalf of the Temple of St. John Berchams whenever there may be one who can detect a lie present in a meeting. Daniel is articulate, soft spoken, and easily manipulated. He has the statblock of a commoner with proficiency in religion.
Headmistress Margaret Du Vant is a tall and severe woman, wearing exclusively crimson clothing and moving exclusively on a Floating Disk she summons for the purpose. She is an extremely busy woman, having to manage every member of the faculty and staff, as well as every one of the irresponsibly intelligent students under her care. She spends her nights performing divination rituals to determine the threats to her college, the intentions of her students, and the state of her own morality. She makes a point of sensing her own morality regularly to make sure she is safe from damnation, if only barely. She has the statblock of a Mage with access to all divination spells.
