This game is actually really fun, I promise. For those who don't know, D&D is called a "tabletop role playing game."
What makes D&D unique in the board game world is that you can try to do basically anything. The world exists in the collective imagination of everyone at the table. You have direct control over your character and through them you can affect the rest of the world.
But a game without challenge is no fun, that's where I come in. I'm what is called a Dungeon Master (DM). I control every monster, villager, friend, and foe of the party. While you describe what your character does, I explain how the world reacts to it.
What makes this different from just an improvisational game of make believe are the rules, which the DM enforces. To jump from point A to point B, I will make you roll a die to see how well you do it. You might fall on your face or you might do a somersault in the air before you land on your feet. That random chance provided by the dice and the rules provided by the books (there are a lot of books) makes you think critically about what your character will attempt to do.
